Start with a Site Assessment, Not a Camera Catalogue

A proper installation starts by walking the property, identifying entry points, blind spots, high-value areas, and lighting conditions at different times of day — then selecting cameras to match, not the other way around.

Choosing the Right Camera Types

• Dome cameras — discreet, vandal-resistant, good for indoor common areas and retail floors.
• Bullet cameras — longer range, visible deterrent, suited to perimeters and entrances.
• PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) — for large open areas like parking lots or warehouses where an operator needs to track movement.
• Fisheye/multi-sensor — wide-area coverage from a single mounting point, useful in large halls or retail floors to reduce camera count.

Resolution matters more than most buyers expect: a 2MP camera may be fine for general monitoring, but identifying faces or number plates reliably usually needs 4MP or higher.

IP vs Analog: Make This Decision Early

IP cameras (connected over Ethernet with PoE) offer higher resolution, onboard analytics, and simpler single-cable installation. Analog cameras are cheaper per unit but need separate power and video cabling, and cap out at lower resolutions. For any new installation today, IP CCTV is the default recommendation — the price gap has narrowed significantly.

Planning the Cabling and Power

Every IP camera needs a Cat6 (or better) cable run back to a PoE switch or NVR, within standard distance limits (100m per run without extenders). Plan cable routes before mounting brackets — running cable after cameras are installed is always more expensive and messier. Outdoor cameras need weatherproof (IP66/IP67-rated) housings and cable glands.

Sizing Your Recording Storage

Storage requirements depend on:

• Resolution and frame rate — higher resolution and frame rate consume more storage per camera per day.
• Compression — H.265 roughly halves storage needs compared to H.264 at the same quality.
• Retention period — how many days of footage you are legally or operationally required to keep (7, 15, and 30 days are common targets).
• Number of channels — total cameras recording simultaneously.

• Mounting cameras too high or at the wrong angle, making faces unidentifiable.
